It uses UV-C light to inactivate bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by disrupting their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. Unlike chemical treatments, UV sterilisation does not alter the taste, odour, or composition of the water, making it ideal for commercial, industrial, and healthcare applications.

A UV system works by passing water through a chamber containing a UV lamp enclosed in a quartz sleeve. As water flows past the lamp, the UV-C light penetrates the cells of microorganisms, rendering them harmless. Regular maintenance — including annual lamp replacement and periodic sleeve cleaning or replacement — is crucial to ensure consistent, reliable water disinfection.

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is a chemical-free, highly effective method of inactivating pathogens, making your drinking water safe for human consumption. UV systems protect against bacteria, viruses, and chlorine-resistant parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. While municipal water supplies are treated before reaching homes, private water supplies (PWS) are the responsibility of the property owner. We recommend all PWS have at least basic protection against microbiological contaminants. Installing a UV system on a municipal supply can also provide peace of mind during boil water advisories caused by infrastructure failures or flooding.

In the UK, PWS dosing standards are typically 30 mJ/cm² for England, Wales and Ireland, and 40 mJ/cm² for Scotland. We recommend installing a 5 μ filter before the UV system to protect the lamp and optimise performance.
